Crooked, sticking-out or gapped teeth: are braces suitable?
An examination of about 30 minutes assesses whether braces suit your teeth.
Metal braces RM6,000 all-inclusive. RM1,000 deposit, balance on Payment Plan A or B.

Treatment may not be appropriate for every patient and depends on a clinical assessment. Your quote is confirmed after the examination.
What people usually come in describing
Seven descriptions come up again and again at the front desk. Treatment for most takes 18 to 24 months unless noted otherwise. That is not a promise about your case.

Overlapping or bunched teeth (overcrowding)
Teeth compete for room, so they overlap. Braces bring them back into line; usually 12 to 30 months.

Teeth that stick out (protruding upper front teeth)
The upper front teeth jut forward, sometimes so far the lips do not close easily. Braces pull them back.

Gaps between teeth (spacing, diastema)
There is open space between the upper front teeth. Braces close it; usually 12 to 24 months. The retainer matters since spaces can reopen.

Lower teeth in front (underbite, anterior crossbite)
The lower teeth sit in front of the upper ones when you bite; braces fix it if tooth position is the cause, or the case is referred for a jaw surgery assessment if the jawbone is the cause.
Deep bite
The upper teeth cover too much of the lower ones when you bite. Braces open the bite by resettling the back teeth.
Crossbite
Upper teeth close inside the lower ones instead of outside. Braces, sometimes with an expander, realign the dental arches.
Open bite
The back teeth meet but the front ones never touch. Habits like tongue thrusting must be addressed too; usually 24 to 36 months.
Your first visit: what happens
The examination takes about 30 minutes, and is a separate appointment from any treatment.
- Book by WhatsApp, phone or the booking form. The clinic is open Saturday and Sunday; closed Friday.
- A visual check of the teeth and gums: decay, existing fillings, gum condition.
- An assessment of how the upper and lower teeth meet: which of the seven patterns above applies, and whether the cause is the teeth or the jawbone.
- Records or radiographs where indicated; the cost is stated to you before they are taken.
- A discussion of your options, including doing nothing for now.
You leave with a written treatment plan and quotation for your own case. No treatment starts until you agree.
Bring any older X-rays or dental records if you have them, plus your MyKad. Coming with a child? A parent or guardian needs to be there too.
What usually has to be sorted before the brackets go on
Active problems worsen under a bracket, so the mouth is made healthy first, then the appliance goes on.
- Active decay. Cavities are filled before the brackets go on.
- Bleeding or swollen gums, and gum disease. Inflammation is controlled first.
- Heavy tartar. Scaling comes before the brackets go on.
- Broken or unrestored teeth. Repaired first so the tooth can take the treatment force.
- Retained baby teeth. Assessed since the permanent tooth beneath decides the plan.
- Wisdom teeth, where relevant. Removed only if impacted, infected or in the way of the plan.
Braces costs in brief
Metal braces are RM6,000 all-inclusive: extractions, scaling, retainer and rebonding. RM1,000 deposit, balance on Payment Plan A or B. Fillings, gum treatment or other work needed before braces is charged separately. Ceramic, lingual and gold braces are quoted at the examination. Details: pricing page.
Age, and what changes with it
Children
Between the ages of about 6 and 12, the mouth holds a mix of baby and permanent teeth. Mostly this needs monitoring: checking the permanent teeth arrive in order. Many cases wait until the full set is through.
Teenagers
The most common time to start treatment is once the permanent teeth are through, usually at 12 to 16. Bone still adapts quickly at this age.
Adults
No upper age limit while gums and bone are healthy, though adult cases usually run longer, 18 to 36 months. Existing crowns, bridges or implants change the plan. More: the adult braces article.
When braces are not the answer, or not yet
A straight answer is more useful than a wrong appointment. Four situations get a no, or not yet:
- Gum disease that is not under control. Moving teeth through bone that is being lost makes it worse.
- Oral hygiene that has to improve first. Brackets make cleaning harder; if plaque is building up, brushing technique has to improve first.
- A jawbone mismatch. Braces alone are not enough; the case is referred for a jaw surgery assessment.
- Not being able to commit to the visits. Most cases need an appointment roughly once a month for 18 months or more.

What you commit to if you go ahead
Braces are a two-year routine, not a one-off procedure, and that is worth knowing before you agree to it.
- Adjustment visits. Roughly once every 4 to 6 weeks, about 20 to 30 minutes each.
- Discomfort in the first days. Teeth feel tender for 3 to 5 days after fitting and after each adjustment.
- Cleaning takes longer. Brush after every meal, and use an interdental brush around the brackets.
- Food that breaks brackets. Avoid hard and sticky food: ice, nuts, bones, caramel and chewy sweets.
- The retainer after the braces come off. Worn as instructed, and included in the RM6,000.
